Starter in football, basketball, and baseball senior year; outstanding pass receiver; voted outstanding player 1949; played in Refrigeration Bowl during sophomore year.
After retiring from pro-football, became assistant football coach and basketball coach at University of Evansville for 3 years; left coaching in 1961 and became an associate at Jasper Engines and Transmissions, Inc., where he remains actively involved in the business.
Professional Athletic Background: Played with Philadelphia Eagles 1952 as defensive back and led NFL in punt returns; also played for Green Bay Packers 1957. Ray was a member of the 1957 Grey Cup winning Hamilton Ticat's and was involved in one of the strangest plays in Grey Cup history. Ray had just picked off his second pass of the game and was headed down the sidelines with a clear path to the end zone, until a spectator standing on the sidelines near the Winnipeg bench, stuck out his foot and tripped Bawel, preventing the touchdown, though the Ticats won the game easily, 32-7. Although he had that touchdown wiped out, he scored another on a fumble recovery.
