Served in US Army during WWI; first Indiana high school to adopt Chicago Bears "T" formation; presented at football clinics throughout Midwest regarding football innovations.
First wife, Susie - deceased; children, Della Sue, Barbara, Mary Ellen, Benjamin, Betty Ann, and Joseph; second wife, Mildred; step-children, Helen, Louise, Robert.
Coaching Experience: Coached all sports at Wilmington College, OH, 1920; coached all sports at Geneseo Township HS, IL, 1922-1925, and Granite City HS, IL, 1925-1927; varsity football coach and assistant for all other freshman sports at Indianapolis Washington High School 1927-1950, with a record of 105-89-19; assistant football coach/scout at Washington another 7 years, retiring in 1958.

Coaching Honors: Indianapolis City Champions 1930, 1932, and 1944; Co-city Champions 1933 and 1936.

Outstanding Players Coached: Phil Bayt, a former Mayor of Indianapolis; Jim Carter, Purdue All-American and former Anderson HS coach; Frank Luzar, College All-State for Wabash; Harry Cherry, former Director of Boy's Club in Seymour, IN; Joe Dezelan, former Coach at Cathedral HS; Boris Dimancheff, All-American Pro on Chicago Cardinals; Purdue graduates Red Carter, Robert Kersey, Clifford Baumback; Carter Byfield, Coach and Administrator at Pike HS; Carlos Bell, Coach at Tech HS; and, Charles Leaman, Athletic Director at Northwest HS.
