Bonnell was All-SIAC and All-State his junior and senior year. He was Castle's Offensive Player of the Year in 1987 and kicked for the South team in the 1988 Indiana North/South All-Star game. He was recognized by Sports Illustrated Faces in the Crowd in October 1987 for kicking 4 field goals of 51, 47, 40 and 22 yards against Boonville. Scott played for legendary Head Coach John Lidy who is also a member of the Hall of Fame.

Bonnell was a 4-year starter at IU and a First Team All-Big 10 selection in 1991 and 1992 as well as receiving recognition as 4-time Academic All-Big 10, Honda Scholar Athlete, and Texaco Scholar Athlete. He finished his career with 261 points that ranked him second all-time in school history with 117 extra points and 48 field goals, both IU records when he graduated. Bonnell had a career long FG of 55 yards against Michigan in 1989, which held as IU's school record for 25 years. He played for legendary IU coach Bill Mallory and was a member of the 1988 Liberty Bowl Championship team and 1991 Copper Bowl championship tea.
Scott has worked with local high school kids in the Evansville area on kicking and holding and was inducted as a member of the Greater Evansville Hall of Fame Class of 2016.
Scott and his wife Kim have three children, Evan, Elisa, and Estelle
Scott was invited to the NFL combine upon graduating from IU. He signed a free-agent contract with the Chicago Bears in 1993
