Earned 9 varsity letters with 3 in football, 3 in track, and 3 in basketball; football All-State honors with school record for most TD's in a season (19) and most yards rushing (1,321); set 3 school records in track; captain of football and basketball teams; played safety in North-South All-Star Game in Bloomington, IN, 1973.

Freshman starter on 1973 National Championship team; consensus All-American on National Championship team 1977; recorded a 99-yard interception TD return vs. Purdue in 1975; appeared in Sugar Bowl, Gator Bowl 1976, and Cotton and Japan Bowls 1978; selected for Walter Camp All-American Team; holds school record for interceptions (17).
In 2011, named one of the Top 50 players in Notre Dame history with 153 career tackles.

Professional Athletic Background: First-round draft pick of Detroit Lions and played there 1977-1980; played for Houston Oilers 1981, Chicago Blitz 1983, Arizona Wranglers 1984, and Houston Gamblers 1985 of USFL; a knee injury eventually ended his career.

Professional Athletic Honors: Voted to NFL's Rookie Team 1978; started every game of first two seasons with Detroit; recorded a 76-yard TD interception against Minnesota; USFL's all-time interception leader, with 6 interceptions in one game April 2, 1983, against Tampa Bay.
