Few players in Indiana State University football history have possessed the pass-rushing prowess and productivity of Dan Brandenburg. For his standout career for the Sycamores, the Rensselaer native is inducted into the Indiana Football Hall of Fame today. Dan follows in the footsteps of his father, Steve, who was inducted into the Indiana Football Hall of Fame in 2018 after a similarly impressive playing career at Indiana State and a 33-year coaching career, including 29 years at Rensselaer Central High School. Brandenburg played defensive end for Indiana State from 1992-95. In four seasons with the Sycamores, Brandenburg had 215 tackles (116 solo and 99 assist) while recording a school record 32 sacks. He also set the school record for sacks in a season with 13 during his sophomore campaign. He led Indiana State with 15 tackles for loss as a junior, was sixth in total tackles with 66 (36 solo) and led the team in quarterback sacks with seven. As a senior, Brandenburg was fifth on the team in total tackles with 71 (38 solo), led the team in quarterback sacks with 11 and was credited with 20 quarterback hurries. He recorded a career-high 16 tackles in a game against Southwest Missouri State as a sophomore en route to recording 66 tackles (36 solo) for the season, which ranked second on the team. Brandenburg earned All-Gateway Conference team honors three times (1993, 1994, 1995) and was named to several All-America teams during his career. He was selected to the first team by the American Football Coaches Association along with a second team selection by the Associated Press and Don Hansen’s Football Guide after his junior campaign. He was named to first team by The Sporting News and American Football Quarterly after his senior season along with a third team selection by the Associated Press and an honorable mention selection by Don Hansen’s Football Guide.
Brandenburg was named to the Missouri Valley Football Conference’s Silver Anniversary team in 2009 alongside notable names Sean Payton and Kurt Warner. He was inducted into the 22nd class of the Indiana State Athletics Hall of Fame in 2013.
Dan and his wife, Kelly, live in Melbourne, Fla. They have two children, Isabella and Bo.
Brandenburg played in the 1995 Blue-Gray All-Star Football Game and participated in the NFL’s Scouting Combine in Indianapolis before being selected in the seventh round of the NFL Draft by the Buffalo Bills. He played three seasons with the Bills, appearing in 42 games and starting one. He accumulated 18 tackles and one fumble recovery as a reserve linebacker and special teams’ contributor.
