In October of 2004, he was named Indianapolis Colts Coach of the Week. During his career he was chosen as conference Coach of the Year twelve times and the IFCA Region 1 Coach of the Year 1A-3A five times. Jeff also received special recognition in 1996 as the Inland Steel/Post Tribune Educator of the Year for Whiting High School and then in 2015 he was again recognized as the Whiting robertsdale Educator of the year for Whiting High School.
Jeff met his wife Sandy at Purdue and they were married in Boston in the summer of 1984. They have been blessed with two daughters, Cassandra (Patrick) and Birttani (Jerry) Lynch, and two beautiful granddaughters, Kaizley Lynch, and Olivia Cain.
Jeff began his teaching career at Whiting high school in the fall of 1987 where he taught Industrial Technology in the middle school and high school. The spring of 88 he helped to restart football in the middle school. In the fall of 1988, he bacame the Head middle school coach and helped Sherwood Haydock with the high school team. From 1989 to 1994 Jeff worked as an assistant on Coach Haydock's staff. The last three seasons as his defensive coordinator, Jeff took over the Whiting football program in the summer of 1995 and continued until retiring after the 2018 season. On September 11, 2011 Coach Cain achieved a milestone achievement by becoming the winningest coach in Whiting history (119th win) and finished his coaching career with a winning percentage of 70% and overall record of 194-83. During that time, Whiting had 5 undefeated seasons, won 16 "Battles of 119th Street", won 9 conference championships, 4 sectional championships and one state runner-up. He coached 35 all-state players and 7 all-star players during his career at Whiting. Jeff served as an IFCA class representative from 1996 - 2018 and was an assistant coach for the North Team in the 1997 IFCA All-Star Game.
