John was selected as the Defensive Coordinator for the 1999 North/South All-Star Game. He has served on the IFCA Board of Directors for multiple years. John was the director of the Evansville Football Clinic for 10 years. He won the Don Watson Award - Evansville Football Clinic.
John and his wife Denise have 5 children, Aaron Elliott, Joey Elliott, Robby Kerner, Nick Kerner and Danny Kerner.
John has 44 years of coaching experience at the High School and Collegiate level in Indiana and Kentucky. From 2022 - Present Evansville North High School, From 2017-2020 Henderson County High School, 2011-2016 Ballard Memorial High School, 2008-2010 Henderson County High School, 2005-2007 Tell City High School (Head Coach), 2001-2004 Castle High School, 1991-2000 Reitz High School, 1990 University of Evansville, 1983-1985 Franklin Community High School (Head Coach), 1982 South Decatur (Head Coach), 1979-1981 Hamilton Southeastern High School, 1978 North Posey, 1974-1977 Evansville Bosse High School. John is still actively coaching at 66 years old. John took over losing programs and turned them into winners as their Head Coach. Assistant at Hamilton Southeastern when they won the 1981 Class A State Championship and 1979 Runner-up. He was an instructor at USI teaching "Coaching Football". At Ballard Memorial, they set a record with 4 winning seasons in a row. He is the winningest coach in Ballard Memorial history (tie). Winner of the first 2A playoff game in Ballard Memorial's school history. He was the first head coach to win a Sectional Championship at Franklin Community.
