Served in US Navy 1942-1946, serving as assistant coach of Fleet City and Shoemaker, CA, and Athletic Director of Camp Ojai, CA; Charter Inductee to Ball State Hall of Fame 1976; one of the original founders of Indiana Football Coaches Association 1970; one of original founders of the Indiana Football Hall of Fame; a $1,000 Hub Etchison scholarship was established in 1979 and is given annually by the IFCA to a member's son and a member's daughter during the annual Indiana North-South High School All-Star game.

Coaching Experience: Assistant football and basketball coach at Lowell HS 1939-1942; athletic director of Windfall HS 1946-1948; head football coach and athletic director at Richmond HS 1948-1979; overall football record of 181-64-7; won 12 North Central Conference Championships; won Mythical State Championships 1965 and 1967; had 5 undefeated teams and 12 teams ranked in UPI polls; had two State Play-off teams, over 200 football scholarships for his players, and 6 players gained recognition as pro players; ended 1975 season with 35 consecutive wins.

Coaching Honors: Was State Coach of the Year 1956, 1967, 1976; was nominated to National High School Athletic Coaches Association as Mid-West Coach of the Year 1976; 4-time Ball State Coach of the Year; 7-time North Central Conference Coach of the Year; received Indiana Governor's Citation For State Athletic Coaching Accomplishments 1971; served as South head coach of North-South All-Star Game and won 31-0 over North 1971; was Head Coach of Pop Warner All-American Team 1970.
