The 2006 EA SPORTS National Player of the Year. A Parade All-American as a running back for Coach Steve Tutsie. Darren was an All-American and All-Midwest Region selection by PrepStar. As a senior, he rushed for 2,806 yards and a state record 61 touchdowns, the number 4 total in U.S. prep football history. He was voted the Indianapolis Star Indiana Mr. Football, earning 94% of the votes cast by coaches and media across the state. As a junior, he rushed for 2,148 yards and 39 touchdowns en route to earning all-state honors. He earned Player of the Year honors as a sophomore after rushing for over 2,000 yards. In his career, he rushed for 7,220 yards and 127 touchdowns, leading his team to four Class 5A state championships.

After graduation Darren accepted a football scholarship to attend Virginia Tech University. While at Virginia Tech, he set the single game rushing record for 253 yards against Maryland and was the only Virginia Tech player to rush for a touchdown during each of his first six games. Additionally, Darren was named The Most Valuable Player in the 2009 Orange Bowl game after rushing for 153 yards and scoring the game clinching touchdown.
Darren and his wife, Taneesha have 3 children: James, Taylor, and Jru.
