Awarded Indiana's highest civilian honor, Sagamore of the Wabash, 1994; Xavier University Grad School Alumnus of the Year 1982; also coached track with 2 different high and low hurdlers winning 4 state championships in successive years; served as principal of Bishop Dwenger HS 15 years.
Wife, Patricia; children, John II (Rebecca), Barney (Eileen), Michael (Mary Ann), Patrick (Christy), Daniel (deceased), Mary Pat (Kyle), Thomas (Sandra), Rev. Joseph, Martin (Megan), and Kelly (William); 28 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Coaching Experience: Ottawa Marquette in IL 1953; Cincinnati Roger Bacon 1954-1958; Fort Wayne Bishop Luers 1959-1966, a new school with first varsity team in 1960; St. Bede Academy 1967-1978; after 26 years coaching, career record reserves/junior varsity 124-17-0 and varsity 108-59-5.

Coaching Honors: Selected to Athletic Hall of Fame in two high schools - Roger Bacon and St. Bede Academy; 3 of former assistants won State Championships in Illinois; as assistant coach at #1 Roger Bacon in 1957, played and defeated #1 Louisville, KY, St. Xavier.

Outstanding Players Coached: Dave Ostrowsia (4-year starter at Auburn and HS All-American); Mark Kenny (Team Captain at Air Force Academy); Jeff Gilligan (Junior College All-American, then 2-year starter at Auburn).
