Tom is the record holder at Marian High School in total career offense with 4,604 yards, as well as the career passing leader with 3,354 yards. He was team captain in both his junior and senior seasons in football playing for Hall of Fame Coach, Mike Hecklinski. He was a three-year starter in both football and basketball. He led his football team to two undefeated seasons as well as two state championships (1975 & 76) in his junior and senior years. Tom was voted as team MVP as well as first-team All-State in football. He played in the North/South All-Star game. He won the Mishawaka Kiwanis Club Athlete of the Year in 1977.

Tom is married to Cathleen. They have 2 children and 2 grandchildren.
Tom signed a free-agent contract with the Detroit Lions following graduation.
