In 2007, Mike Goebel won the Senator Richard Lugar "Fitness Award". In 2001, he was awarded the Tri-State Multiple Sclerosis Society First Annual "Spirit" Award. In 2000, He was named the Evansville Westside Civitan Club "Citizen of the Year". Mike won the Independent Colleges of Indiana "Realizing the Dream" Award (Eli Lilly) in 1994. In 1982 He was awarded the US Department of Education Fulbright Scholarship Award. He has won 12 IHSAA Wrestling State Championships and is a member of the IHSWCA Wrestling Hall of Fame.
Mike and his wife Melanie, have two children, Zachary (Bo) and Mackenzie.
Mike Goebel has been a staple of Mater Dei athletics making his mark in wrestling and continuing that legacy in football. In addition to being a stand-out teacher and elected government official, Coach Goebel has elevated the football program at Mater Dei to a championship contender year in and year out. Coach Goebel was an assistant for 24 years, 23 while at Mater Dei under Coach Frank Will. As an assistant coach and offensive coordinator, he led the Wildcats to the 1994 IHSAA State Championship game. In 1997 he was named the head coach and has earned two state titles (2000 and 2022), 6 Semi-State titles, 11 Regional titles and 17 Sectional Championships. Mike has been an Indiana North-South All-Star game coach, a two-time IFCA Coach of the Year and multiple metro and city Coach of the Year awards. Mike has a career record of 260-82 and is the winningest coach in the SIAC history. He is a pillar of the Mater Dei community and has been the dean of football coaches in the SIAC and Evansville.
