Captain of All-State College Football Team; punter with average over 50 yards per boot; also played baseball.
During World II, received a Presidential Citation from President F. D. Roosevelt for performance during the Battle of Bori while aboard the USS Cardwell as 1st Class Chief Petty Officer; Director of Health and Safety at IU 1954; attended US Army Command General Staff College and graduated 1966, teaching rocketry classes in Indianapolis for the US Army for 8 years; retired as Lt. Colonel from the US Army Reserves; became full professor at IU in 1984; named a Sagamore of the Wabash from Gov. Orr in 1984.
First wife, Helen; sons, Butch, Gary, Pete, and Chip; second wife, Barbara; step-sons, Mike, John, Frank, and Tom.
Coaching Experience: Coached at Van Wert, OH, 1945-1946; coached at University High School in Bloomington 1948-1966; record was 110-55-1; never cut a player, one time playing 132 by sending in 11 players at a time for a play.

Coaching Honors: Received Honor of Grid Iron Champs of America through University High School for Coach and Team in 1964-1965.

Outstanding Players Coached: All-State players coached were P.T. Buntin, Thom Teter, Bill Dickens, and Charles Dunn.
