Earned All-Northern Indiana Eastern Division Conference and All-State honors as a fullback 1941; won a Golden Gloves welterwright title in 1937.

Professional Athletic Background: While waiting for his return home after the war's end, he played football with a service team in France; word of his ability filtered back to Chicago Bears owner-coach, George Halas, who offered him a tryout; he played six years as fullback and halfback and was the team's punter; ranks 11th on Bears' all time rushing list with 2,081 yards, a 4.1 yards per rush average; he scored 19 touchdowns between 1947 and his retirement after 1952 season.

Outstanding Recognition: Served in First Army Signal Corps 1942-1945; went ashore in Normandy at Utah Beach on D-plus 1 June 7, 1944; retired from pro football in 1953 and returned to Mishawaka; elected to Penn Township assessor's office in 1954; held that office for 32 years before his retirement in 1986.
