While in High School, David had 147 receptions for 2,941 yards (a state record until the mid-1990s), had 26 interceptions and scored 214 points. He was a 4-year starter, and a captain in his senior year. During his career at NJ-SP, his teams went 40-7 including a state runner-up in 1984 and a sectional champ in 1985. The 1985 team had 10 consecutive defensive shutouts. It averaged 46 points per game and allowed 3.1 points per game. David was a 4-year letterwinner in football, basketball and baseball. Academically, he ranked 2nd in his class.

David received a scholarship to play football at Ball State University where he was a 3-year starter at safety. He earned All-Mid-American Conference honors at safety in 1989. He had 7 interceptions in 1989. David was named Academic All-American in 1989; the year the Cardinals were MAC Champions. He played in the 1989 California Raisin Bowl. While at Ball State, David was nicknamed "The Professor".
David finished his high school career as the state's all-time leading receiver in a Russ Radtke wishbone offense. Russ Radtke has been quoted as saying that David Haugh is the best player he ever coached, which is impressive, considering Radtke has over 400 career victories.
While in high school, David was a DJ for WKVI, the local radio station. He worked for the South Bend Tribune, covering Notre Dame Football primarily from 1993-2003. In 2003, he joined the Chicago Tribune until 2020. He was the "In the Wake of the News" columnist starting in 2009, which is a very prestigious position for the newspaper. David covered all Chicago sports, but he focused more on Bears football. He was a co-host on the "Kap and Haugh Show" from 2013-2015 on Comcast Sportsnet Chicago. In July of 2018, he joined Mike Mulligan on the "Mully and Haugh Show" on WSCR radio, 670 The Score. David is still in this role today. They discuss all the current sports topics in Chicago. David is also an NBC Sports Chicago contributor and has received several local, state, and national writing awards. He was chosen aas the 1999 Indiana Sportswriter of the Year by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association.
