While at Indiana, Ernie earned degrees in Criminal Law and Business, graduating in 1988. During his collegiate football career, Jones distinguished himself as one of the top players in the nation. his accomplishments include being named Big Ten Player of the Year in 1988, earning recognition on the prestigious Playboy All-American Team, serving as Team Captain for the Indiana University football program.
Throughout his career, Jones received special recognition from Indiana University and Head Coach Bill Mallory, who acknowledged his leadership and impact on the field.
Ernest Jones' journey from Elkhart, Indiana to collegiate stardom at Indiana University and into the professional ranks reflects a lifetime of dedication to football, leadership, and perseverance. His accomplishments on and off the field have earned him recognition among the greats of the game and make him a proud inductee into the Indiana Football Hall of Fame, class of 2026.
Off the field, Jones is proud of his family and the paths his children have forged. His son, Julius Jones, is an entrepreneur, His daughter Jordan Kirby Jones, serves her community as a Chandler firefighter. His youngest daughter, Londyn Jones, is an honors student who loves to read and continues to pursue academic excellence.
Jones' leadership, work ethic, and talent did not go unnoticed. His collegiate achievements helped propel him to the professional level, where he was drafted into the National Football League by the Arizona Cardinals. He played five seasons with the Cardinals, continuing to demonstrate the skill and determination that defined his career.
In addition to his time with Arizona, Jones also played one season with the Los Angeles Rams and one season overseas with the Amsterdam Admirals of the World Football league, further showcasing his versatility and commitment to the game.
