4 varsity letters in football; captain junior and senior years; listed in Spaulding Year Book with the outstanding quarterbacks in the country and mentioned on the All-State Team in 1928; 1 track letter and, as a freshman, placed in the 880 in the Little State meet at DePauw University.
Served as athletic director at Howe 1943-1974; mayor of Indianapolis declared June 5, 1974, as "Sam Kelley Day;" originator and director of Hoosier Relays at Indiana University 1948-1970; served as a high school and intercollegiate football official 1931-1956; for over 15 years started IHSAA Sectional and Regional Track meets; started the IHSAA State Cross Country meet four years and the State IHSAA Track Meet one year.
Coaching Experience: Coached football at Princeton HS 2 years, Alexandria HS 1 year, and Indianapolis Howe HS 14 years, with an overall record of 83-51; started the football programs at Alexandria and Howe.

Coaching Honors: The new Howe football stadium was named Samuel T. Kelley Field.
