Elected to United States House of Representatives in 1939, serving until 1949 (5 terms); was a Second Lieutenant in Infantry 1918 during World War 1; nickname “Two Penny” came from his penchant for a cigar - he always bought one of the two for a nickel variety, but paid three cents for just one for years; in his later years, he refused to pay 3 cents since he bought so many two for a nickel cigar for three cents he felt he had already paid extra so now he needed to pay only 2 pennies.

Coaching Experience: Coached football at Bicknell 1919-1920, with record of 11-3; at Linton 1923-1938, with a record of 96-47-7 and a winning percentage of 66%.

Coaching Honors: The 1925 and 1933 teams were undefeated and considered mythical state champions, with 1923 team outscoring Indiana opponents 152-0; 1919 Bicknell team was also undefeated.
