At Purdue, was an assistant freshman football coach 1929; assistant varsity football coach 1931; was dean of Big Ten Athletic Directors at time of death; served on numerous conference and NCAA committees; in November, 1971, the Alumni Board of his fraternity, Sigma Pi, designated an annual scholarship as the “Guy J. Mackey Scholarship Award;" on May 6, 1972, awarded the tenth Distinguished Alumni Award, posthumously, from Purdue Alumni Association Inc. for meritorious services performed for more than 40 years, the highest tribute which can be given by the association; in June, 1975, inducted posthumously into National Association of Collegiate Directors Hall of Fame, the fifth former Big Ten Athletic Director selected.

Merit Contributor - Administrator: Administrative Assistant to Athletic Director in 1941; Purdue Athletic Director 1942 to February 22, 1971; served Purdue sports for 46 years; 5 football coaches served under him; Purdue played in Rose Bowl January 1, 1967; received Leather Medal Award from Sigma Delta Chi in 1944; member of National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame; co-founder of John Purdue Club; instrumental in the construction of basketball arena completed for 1967-1968 season and named Mackey Arena in his honor by Board of Trustees in 1971; built two 18 hole golf courses, an outdoor track, tennis courts, baseball diamond, indoor and outdoor swimming pools and a co-rec gymnasium; Ross-Ade Football Stadium was enlarged 5 times under his tenure.
