As an offensive and defensive back, earned Honorable Mention as a member of All-State Football Eleven 1940; participated in basketball and track 2 years.

Was in Marine Corps Officer Training Program at IU; Marine Corps transferred him to ND; then, in 1944, was called to active duty; after service, completed college career at U of I.
As a walk-on at IU, impressed Coach McMillan enough that he won a scholarship; played football for Coach Frank Leahy and NDU's 1943 National Championship team; played halfback on Illinois Big 10 Conference Championship team 1946, and Rose Bowl winning team January 1, 1947.

Professional Athletic Background: Played for Buffalo Bills as a two-way player 1948; played for Detroit Lions under Coach Bo McMillan 1949-1950; completed career as a defensive back with Baltimore Colts 1951.
