John was a Fullback and Linebacker at Noblesville under Hall of Fame coach Jim Beldon. He was a 3-year letterman for the Millers. John was a member of the South All Star Team in 1976. He was 1st Team All-Hamilton County in 1974 & 1975. John was 1st Team All-Sagamore Conference in 74 & 75 as well. He was Honorable Mention All-State in 1974 & 1975. John was a 3-year letterman at Noblesville.

While at University of Indianapolis, John lettered in 1978 & 1979. They were Heartland Conference Champions in 1978.
Coach Mallery’s devotion to the game of football, and what the
game teaches young people is illustrated by being awarded the
Robert Springer Presidents Award and the Ken Leffler Service
Award from the Indiana Football Coaches Association.
As an assistant coach for Franklin Central, he was part of multiple state
championship and runner up teams.
