Inducted into Miami University Athletic Hall of Fame, IU Athletic Hall of Fame 2002, Mid-American Conference Hall of Fame 2013, Phi Kappa Tau Hall of Fame, Northern Illinois Athletic Hall of Fame; member of Miami's "Cradle of Coaches;" 3 sons followed him into football as players and coaches - Mike, All-Big Ten at Michigan and current assistant special teams coordinator with Jacksonville Jaguars; Doug, co-captain at Michigan and current defensive backs coach with Atlanta Falcons; Curt, who also attended Michigan and currently head football coach at Indiana State University.

Coaching Honors: MAC Coach of the Year 1973, 1983; Big Ten Coach of the Year 1986 and 1987; Kodak District Coach of the Year 1986 and 1987; Miami team won the Tangerine Bowl in 1973; Colorado team appeared in Bluebonnet Bowl 1975 and Orange Bowl 1976; NIU team appeared in California Bowl 1983; IU team appeared in 6 Bowl games (All-American 1986, Peach 1987, Liberty 1988, Peach 1990, Copper 1991, Independence 1993), winning the 1988 Liberty Bowl and the 1991 Copper Bowl; head coach of 1993 East Team in the East-West Shrine Bowl; on coaching staff of Hula Bowl, Japan Bowl, and East-West Shrine Bowl.
