All-City 1st Team, All-Wabash Valley 1st Team and All-State 2nd Team 1940; 2 varsity letters each in football, basketball, and track.

At Rose Poly in 1941, became first freshman to win Indiana scoring title and fourth in nation with 103 points in 7 games; selected to Indianapolis Star All-Indiana College Conference Team and Indianapolis News All-College 1st Team, a rarity for a freshman; at Rose Poly in 1942, was National Scoring Leader with 165 points in 6 games; named Little College Player of the Year, All-Conference, All-State, Little All-American; named Intercollegiate Team left half back and UPI Honorable Mention All-American Team; at U of I, ranked 3rd in Big Ten rushing.
Season average of 27.5 ppg has never been challenged; enshrined in Rose-Hulman Athletic Hall of Fame; Rose Poly gave McGovern a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1945; retired as superintendent at American Can Company.
