Played football; won State honors in mile run; graduated magna cum laude.
Joined National Guard in 1930 and was active duty 1940-1946; retired as a Lt. Colonel after 20 years service; football/track stadium at Shelbyville HS named McKeand Stadium in his honor in 1971 upon his retirement from teaching; was a member of local Kiwanis Club for 50+ years and also served as its president; Kiwanis Club presents an annual award, the J. M. McKeand-Kiwanis Award, to an outstanding senior football player on basis of scholarship, athletic ability, and leadership.

Coaching Experience: Initiated football program at Shelbyville HS 1927; retired from coaching football at end of 1953 season; also served as track coach 1927-1957.

Coaching Honors: Had an undefeated season in 1932.
