Mike participated in football and baseball while at Hanover. He was captain of the football team his senior year and held numerous pass receiving records. He is a member of Lambda Chi Alpha National Fraternity. He received his Masters of Science Degree from Indiana University, Bloomington in 1974.
Mike was the Head Football Coach of the North All-Stars in 1977. He also received Indiana Coach of the Year Awards in 1973, 1975 & 1976. He was nominated for National Coach of the Year in 1976 and was the North Central Conference Coach of the Year in 1978.
Mike married his high school sweetheart, Nancy. They have 2 children (sons Randy (Amy) and Jeff (Tiffancy) and 6 grandchildren (Jacki, Jeremy, Cooper, Riley, Mike and Jeff Jr.
Mike began his coaching career as an assistant at South Bend St. Joe. He then moved to Elida High School in Lima, Ohio as an assistant for two years. He then moved back to Indiana and coached one season at Concord High School. In 1973, Mike became the Head Football Coach at Marian High School in Mishawaka. He was at Marian for 5 years and build a record of 49-6 (88%). Marian won 3 State Championships in his 5 seasons. 1973 1A, 1975 & 76 in 2A. In 1978, He became the Head Football Coach at Richmond High School (following the legendary Hub Etchison). In 3 years, he built a 25-6 record (81%) and made the play-offs in 1978, winning the North Central Conference.
