All-State Center; played for North team in Indiana All-Stars game; selected Most Valuable Lineman of team senior year; lettered 2 years in football and 2 years in basketball.

Named to Sophomore All-American Team 1970; co-captain in senior year; 2nd Team All-American 1972; Black Sports Magazine All-American First Team 1971; helped team compile a 9-2 record as a sophomore and a spot in Sugar Bowl; named finalist for NCAA Top Five Student-Athlete Award in senior year; selected to participate in Hula Bowl; also earned a varsity letter in basketball, starting several times at forward.
According to Air Force Coach, Ben Martin, the 6 foot 3 and 232 pound Mitchell was probably the best lineman we ever had in Falcon football.... he can do it all;" despite competing in football and basketball and maintaining a busy academic schedule, Mitchell was appointed Deputy Wing Commander in 1972, which made him the number two cadet at the Academy with the rank of Cadet Colonel and responsible for activities of 3,800 cadets.
