All three years that Sim Nelson was at North Side, he was named to the All-Conference team. Two of those years he was also named to the All-State team. In his junior and senior seasons at North, the team would finish with a 19-1 record over 2 years. Sim also played basketball. Twice he was named to the SAC All-Conference team. In his sophomore year, he was Honorable Mention to that team. He played summer baseball in the Connie Mack league where he was named All-State. Sim also played first base on the North Side baseball team and was named to the SAC All-Conference team his senior year.
University of Michigan
1985
Sim went on to play football at the University of Michigan for legendary coach Bo Schembechler from 1981-1985. In his junior year at Michigan, he was named to the All-Big Ten team and was honorable mention in his senior year. As a tight end, Nelson became a favorite target of QB Jim Harbaugh. He played 33 games at Michigan, caught 80 passes for 949 yards, averaging 11.9 yards per catch, and 6 touchdowns. He currently ranks 36th all-time in career receptions and 40th all-time in career receiving yards.
Nelson was inducted into the North Side Athletic Hall of Fame in 2015.
Sim has one daughter, Tamesha Monique Fikes and a son, Sim N. Nelson V.
Nelson signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for 1 season in 1986.
