At Lincoln High School, Painter was a three-year starter who set school records with 5,039 passing yards and 49 touchdowns. He was a Mr. Football finalist and selected to the Indiana All-Star Game as a senior, leading the Alices to an 11-2 record and conference and sectional championships.

Painter became the Boilermakers' starting quarterback midway through his redshirt freshman season and went on to start 41 games over the course of his career. He won 22 games, tied with Bob Griese and Mike Phipps for third among Purdue signal-callers. As a sophomore, Painter set the Purdue season record with 3,985 passing yards, which still stands. It was also the Big Ten leader and now ranks third. His average of 284.6 passing yards per game was good for seventh in the nation.
Painter enjoyed his finest moment in the 2007 Motor City Bowl, which Purdue won 51-48 over Central Michigan. Painter was named the game's most valuable offensive player after setting the Purdue game record with 546 passing yards. In his final game, against Indiana. Painter completed 38 of 54 passes for 448 yards and five touchdowns.
Curtis and his wife, Megan, have two children, Edison and Hayes.
The Indianapolis Colts drafted Painter in the sixth round of the 2009 NFL Draft, and he subsequently played in 11 games, including eight starts, over three seasons. His first career touchdown pass, an 87 yarder to Pierre Garcon, is tied for third longest in franchise history. He threw for a career-high 281 yards in that game. Painter spent the 2012 preseason with the Baltimore Ravens before concluding his career playing inn three games with the New York Giants in 2013.Interestingly, Painter served as a backup to both Manning brothers, Peyton with the Colts and Eli with the Giants.
