Began teaching career in 1972 in Lake Station High School; had completed 36 years as an educator at the time of his death.

Coaching Experience: Offensive coordinator at Lake Station HS (East Gary) 1972-1980; defensive coordinator at Highland HS 1980-1988; defensive coordinator at Valparaiso HS 1988-2004, with a record of 122-73; 33 years service to varsity football, retiring from coaching at the end of the 2004 season; also served 16 years as head wrestling coach - Lake Station 1972-1980 and Highland 1980-1988.

Coaching Honors: 2003 defensive coordinator of North All-Star team; had 1st undefeated team at Lake Station (10-0) 1972; Highland team was Class 5A State Runner-up 1987; Valparaiso team was Class 5A State Runner-up 1987 and 2001; Valparaiso was also Class 5A Semi-State Runner-up 1989 and 2002; assistant coach for North All-Stars 2003; 6 straight Northwest Hoosier Conference Wrestling Titles 1974-1980 and Coach of the Year 3 times.
