Richard was rated Rivals.com’s No. 4 pro-style quarterback in the country after an illustrious high school career at McCutcheon that saw him graduate second in the state in career passing yards (10,777) and touchdowns (92). The imposing 6-foot-5, 225-pound lefty won the 2002 Indiana Mr. Football Award after throwing for 2,920 yards and 27 touchdowns his senior season. McCutcheon went 34-13 during Richard’s four years in high school, a four-year win total the Mavericks have yet to top since his departure. Richard thrived in coach Kevin O’Shea’s high-flying offense, forming an excellent duo with his top target Kelly Martin, who set school records for receptions (143) and receiving yards (2,693). Richard excelled on the baseball diamond as well, winning the 2003 Indiana Mr. Baseball Award after leading the Mavericks to the Class 4A state title. Richard is the only Mr. Football and Mr. Baseball winner in state history, all while maintaining a 4.0 grade-point average and graduating as McCutcheon’s valedictorian. He helped lead McCutcheon to Hoosier Crossroads Conference titles in both football and baseball.
University of Michigan
Richard went on to play quarterback under Lloyd Carr at Michigan. He redshirted in 2003 and appeared in four games in 2004 before pitching for the Wolverines’ baseball team in 2005. Richard dropped his football scholarship at Michigan and focused on baseball full-time before being drafted by the Chicago White Sox in the 2005 MLB Draft.
Richard went on to have a successful 12-year MLB career, throwing 1,284 innings and winning 69 games, before retiring after the 2019 season.
