While at North Central High School, Courtney was named to the Indianapolis Star's All-Marion County Team, the All-MIC Conference Team, Indiana All-State, IFCA Top 50 All-State Team, 2001 North/ South All-Star Game participant, and was an Indiana High School All-Star in Track and Field.

Roby attended Indiana University as a two-sport athlete in football and track. In football, Roby was elected Team Captain and MVP Award winner for his senior season while finishing his career as the most productive receiver in Hoosier football history, breaking the all-time records for career receptions and yardage with 170 catches and 2,524 yards. In 2002, as a sophomore, Roby became one of only three receivers in Hoosier history to gain over 1,000 yards in a single season, while his 59 receptions ranked second in school history. After completing his senior campaign, Roby would earn All-Big Ten Conference honors and was selected to participate in the Senior Bowl All-Star football game, an honor given to the top NFL prospects in the country. In track, Roby would compete in the 100m dash as well as anchor the 4 x 100m relay team. As a junior, Roby placed 4th in the 100m dash at the Big Ten Conference Championships.
During the 2009 season, Roby set a Saints post-season club record with a 61-yard kick return in the victory over the Minnesota Vikings in the NFC Championship game. Courtney finished the season ranked third in the NFL for kick return yardage and was the primary kick returner and top special teams' contributor. Roby led the team for the season in special teams tackles during their run to a victory in Super Bowl XLIV, against his former team, the Indianapolis Colts. Further prompting him to receive the 2009 Saints' Special Teams MVP Award. During the 2010 season Roby was chosen by the NFL as the NFC Special Teams Player of the Month. Roby would be selected by his coaches and teammates to serve as the Saints Team Captain for both the 2011 and 2012 seasons.
Courtney is a former NFL wide receiver and return specialist drafted by the Tennessee Titans in the third round of the 2005 NFL draft, following his historical collegiate football career at IU. Roby also played for the Indianapolis Colts, New Orleans Saints and Atlanta Falcons during his 10-year career.
