Bob started playing football in the 6th grade at Holy Cross Catholic grade school. Bob then went on to play football and baseball at South Bend St, Joseph High School. As a freshman, he played for legendary Hall of Fame Coach Father Walter Bly. Bob went on to play varsity football for 3 years under the direction of Hall of Fame Coach Phil Teegarden. In his senior year, Bob was selected to the NIC All-Conference team at center. Bob had 4 brothers who also played for Coach Teegarden at St. Joe. All 5 wore the number 50. One of those jerseys was on display in the Hall of Fame in Richmond.

Bob received a grant-in-aid to play football at Illinois Benedictine and would play 3 years for HC Tom Beck, who later went on to coach at the University of Notre Dame under coach Lou Holtz.
Bob was the Indianapolis Colts "Coach of the Week" 2003 and 2017, All-Area Coach of the Year four times, IFCA Region 1 Coach of the Year 3 times, Indiana Football Digest "Badge of Courage Award" in 2014, Indiana Football Digest "Lifetime Achievement Award" 2014, IFCA Dave Land coach of the Year 2014 and Indiana Digest 5A Coach of the year 2014, National Federation of High School Sports- State of Indiana Coach of the Year 2014. Bob was presented with the prestigious "Sagamore of the Wabash" Award presented by Gov. Mike Pence & Senator Jim Arnold.
Bob and his wife Lorri have 5 children: Tricia, Robby, Mark, Kevin and Danny.
In 1976, Bob started his football coaching career at South Central High School in Union Mills, Indiana, a small country school with an enrollment of 225. While at South Central his record was 69-36. He is the all-time winningest football coach in SC history. In 1993, Bob was named the 14th Head Football Coach at LaPorte High School. Bob held that position for the next 22 years. Bob was also active in the IFCA. He was region 1 director twice, region 1 ethics committee chairmen from 2000-12, North All-Star Head Coach in 1999, South Bend Sports All-Star Head Coach in 1999. At LaPorte, he won 1 DAC championship (2003), 2 sectional championships (2006, 2014), 1 semi-state championship (2014) and 1 state runner-up (2014). Bob's overall record is 179-167.
