Developed the Academic All-State Teams for IFCA in 1980 (first sport in Indiana to recognize high school academic excellence). Received the Joe Tiller Chapter of National Football Foundation "Outstanding Contributor to Amateur Football" Award 2008. Member of board of directors of the Tiller Chapter of NFF. Received the Hub Etchison Distinguished Service Award from the IFCA in 2022.
Wife, Stella Schafer-Smith; daughters Jennifer Back (husband, Corey) and Karen Hescher (husband, Derek). Stepdaughters, Katie Dees (husband, Julius), Laura Schafer, and Carly Schafer. Grandchildren; Monty and Miles Back, Ryan, Anna and Allison Hescher.
