Gil was an offensive lineman and linebacker for Brownstown Central from 1974 to 1977. He was an Honorable Mention All-Conference Center. During his career at Brownstown, they were District 12 Champions and the first team to reach the play-offs in the "cluster" system in the Class A Playoffs with an 8-3 record while earning a Top Ten ranking in Class A.

At Hanover, Gil played Guard and Center. In 1978, Hanover was "Hoosier Buckeye Conference Champions with a 6-2-1 record. In 1979, they repeated as conference champs with a record of 7-2. In 1980, they won their third straight Hoosier Buckeye Conference Championship as well as qualifying for the NAIA National Championship Playoffs with an 8-2 record. In 1981 Gil won the "Dutch Struck Mental Attitude Award".
Gil was on staff for Indiana in 1983, when they won the "Old Oaken Bucket". In 1995 & 1996, Hamilton Southeastern was Range Line Conference Champions with 11-1 and 9-2 records, respectively. In 1997, HSE played in the Class 4A State Championship game earning a 13-3 record. He has been a part of 5 sectional championships, two at HSE and two at Zionsville. In 2002, Zionsville was Hoosier Crossroads Champions, 4A Sectional and Regional Champs going 10-2. During his college coaching career, Franklin College was 4-time Heartland Conference Champions and 3-time D3 National Playoff participants. In 2002, Gil was a coach in the IFCA North-South All-Star Game. He was also a member of the IFCA Executive Board, as the Director of Continuing Education. In 2018, He received the IFCA Ken Leffler Award. Gil has been a member of the American Football Coaches Association for 35 years.
Gil and his wife Juli (Butler University) have two sons: Carter, and his wife Arianna have one son, Deacon, and their other son, Nolan, a Purdue University graduate with a BS in Agri-Business.
Gil was a Graduate Assistant for Sam Wyche in 1983 and Bill Mallory in 1984.
