President of Indiana Football Coaches Association 1972; member of the first football committee in Indiana 1971; created the original football play-off in 1973; was a member of Selection Committee for first Indiana Football Hall of Fame induction; established the first 10 City Championships in Indianapolis; established the National High School Athletic Coaches Association in 1966; helped establish the Tony Hulman-Tony Hinkle Award; runner-up “Man of the Year" for Indianapolis 1974; was a member of UPI Coaches Board in football for 25 years; hosted an annual golf tournament to raise scholarship funds for students who had family who had worked at Washington High School.
Wife, Carol; children, Michael (wife, Acile) and Mary (husband, Jack); grandchildren, Nathan and Lauren.
Coaching Experience: Head coach of Sacred Heart in Indianapolis 4 years; head coach of Indianapolis Washington 32 years; life-time record of 227-98-8 in 36 seasons.
Coaching Honors: First active coach inducted into Indiana Football Hall of Fame after 30 years of coaching; coached Washington to mythical state championship in 1966; won Class 3A State Championship in 1974, and Class 4A State Runner-up in 1984; State Coach of the Year 3 times and, as State Coach of the Year, was nominated for National Coach of the Year 2 times.
Outstanding Players Coached: George McGinnis, Larry Highbaugh, Don Phillips, Kevin Weatherby, Ed Bopp, Steve Purichia, Kenny Leffler, and Eli Rasheed.
