Chief s were fourth winningest team in pro football over 15 years; ranked seventh in all time pro coaching victories; was second behind Paul Brown among active NFL coaches in all-time wins; inducted into PU Athletics Hall of Fame 1996; became color commentator on CBS for NFL games and on Monday Night Football on radio 1978-1995; last game as announcer was Super Bowl XXX for CBS Radio.
Coaching Experience: Assistant football coach at PU 1948-1955 and head baseball coach 1951-1955; assistant football coach at Southern Methodist University, University of Notre Dame, and University of Miami, Florida; named head coach of AFL's Dallas Texans in 1960, which became the Kansas City Chiefs in 1963; only head coach that franchise knew before he left for New Orleans Saints; with Saints 1976-1977, retiring at end of 1977 season; records of 131-97-10 regular season and 5-3 post season.
Coaching Honors: Lost to Green Bay Packers in Super Bowl I, but won 1970 Super Bowl IV Championship over Minnesota Vikings; led Chiefs to AFL titles in 1962, 1966, 1969, and an AFC title in 1971; AFL Coach of the Year 1968; inducted into Kansas City Chiefs Hall of Fame; inducted into Pro Football Hall of Fame 2003.
