3-year letterman as quarterback; one of famous Four Horsemen of Notre Dame with Jim Crawley, Elmer Layden, and Don Miller; even as smallest quarterback in ND history, led team to 10-0 season, 1925 National Championship, and won Rose Bowl over Stanford 27-10.
After retiring from football, he worked at US Steel in Pittsburgh; author of Quarterback Play and Knute Rockne, Man Builder, on which the movie Knute Rockne, All American was based, starring Ronald Reagan; inducted into College Football Hall of Fame 1958; received Amos Alonzo Stagg Award 1965.
