Continued the family tradition of playing football; most proud of following grandfather, J.W. Surface, who played for Pine Village in the mid to late teens and early 1920s.

3-year football starter at linebacker and tight end; played on 1965 and 1967 Rice Bowl teams; only 2-way player on the 1965 team.
National Football Foundation Hall of Fame Distinguished American Award 2007; has held numerous positions in Indiana Football Coaches Association in Regions 4, 5, and 8; initiated the Region Honors programs in Regions 5 and 8, the first of such programs in Indiana.
Wife, Jill; children, Matthew and Sarah.
Coaching Experience: 1 year at Fremont as head football, basketball, and track coach; 2 years at Union City as head football and wrestling coach; 1 year at Plymouth as head football and wrestling coach; 5 years at Logansport as head football coach; 8 years at New Castle as head football coach; and 22 years at Marion as head football coach; career football coaching record of 257-135-0; retired from coaching in 2007.
