Most Valuable Player in conference and team captain; arrived at Valparaiso intending to play basketball; never played football until a junior at VU; 2-time All-American; named top conference lineman 1955.
Served 21 months in US Army; Altoona High School football field renamed Fuzzy Thurston Athletic Field; inducted into Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame 1975; inducted into Valparaiso Hall of Fame in 1997-1998; inducted into Wisconsin Athletic Hall of Fame in 2003 as the first athlete ever chosen by the people of Wisconsin; owned Fuzzy's #63 Bar and Grill in Green Bay.
Wife, Susan (deceased); children, Mark (Carol), Griff (Robin), and Tori (Jerry); grandchildren, Olivia, Fred, and Joey.
Professional Athletic Background: Drafted in 4th round by Philadelphia Eagles 1955; returned to football with Chicago Bears in 1956; played two seasons with Baltimore Colts prior to joining Green Bay Packers in 1959; retired at end of 1968 season.
Professional Athletic Honors: All-Pro 1961 and 1962; one of only three players to play in six world championship games - 1 with Colts and 5 with Packers; won Super Bowl rings in 1967 and 1968; had the privilege to play under the great Vince Lombardi 1959-1968, winning league championships in 1961, 1962, 1965, 1966, and 1967; named All-Pro twice.
