Tony began his varsity career in his sophomore year as a tight end and wide receiver. In his junior year, he finished the season with 30 receptions for 587 yards and 10 touchdowns. In his senior year, he finished with 40 receptions for 686 yards and 8 touchdowns. During Tony's time at Penn, his teams went 28-5 with 2 NIC Championships and 1 Sectional Championship. His senior team was 11-1 and ranked #1 in the state.

Tony continued his football career on scholarship as tight end at Louisville under legendary Coach Howard Schnellenberger from 1988-1991. After winning only 8 games the previous 3 seasons, Louisville went 8-3, 6-5 and 10-1 in his first 3 years as a Cardinal, capped off by beating Alabama 34-7 to win the 1991 Fiesta Bowl and finished the season 12th in the nation.
In his junior year, Tony was named All-NIC, All-Area, and Junior All-State. In his senior year, he was All-NIC, All-Area, AP and UPI All-State, Bloomington Herald-Telephone Top 33 and USA Today Honorable Mention All-American.
Tony and his wife Debbie have two daughters, Ashley and Kaitlyn.
