Vasco was an All-City defensive back on the 1958 undefeated and Mythical State Championship team at Manual. He had 10 interceptions from his safety position. The 1958 Indianapolis Manual team was voted as the "greatest ever".
Indiana Central
1966
Upon graduation from Manual High School, Vasco enrolled at Indiana Central College, which is now the University of Indianapolis. During those playing days, a local sportswriter said, “Walton is a tough hard-nosed player whose desire and toughness outweigh his size. He is not afraid to slam into anyone in a different colored jersey with the finesse of a gazelle and the momentum of a Sherman Tank.” As a Greyhound, Vasco was not only the team’s Most Valuable football player, but he was also the team’s Most Valuable basketball player. Additionally, this All-Conference performer was inducted into the U Indy Hall of Fame for both sports and was also named to the All-Time U Indy football team. Vasco was a two-way player for Indiana Central.
Ultimately, after his playing days at Indiana Central and before the Indianapolis Colts, Vasco played corner and safety for the pro team the Indianapolis Caps, which at that time was just a step below the N.F.L. In 1969, those Caps, with Vasco providing the leadership in the secondary, won the
Continental Championship. His display of competitive fire at the high school, college, and professional levels made others better and set the highest of standards for the game.
