Lettered in football 1939-1941 as a guard; captain in 1941; 2nd Team Big Ten; Honorable Mention All-American; kicked the winning field goal to beat Purdue University 3-0 with 30 seconds to go in 1940.
Received Indiana University's Clevenger Award in 1985; older son, E. G., Jr., was a guard and captain of his 1971 Indiana University football team, the only father-son to be captain of a Big 10 team and play the same position; was a captain in the Army's 100th Infantry Divison during WW II, being wounded twice; received two Purple Hearts, Bronze Star with Three Clusters, and Combat Infantry Badge while serving in the European Theater of France and Germany.

Professional Athletic Background: Played with Buffalo Bills All-American Conference; member of the 1946 College All-Star team that played against the Los Angeles Rams in Chicago's Soldier Field; a knee injury forced his retirement from football in 1948.
