Coaching Experience: Grad assistant coach, BGSU, 1957, then assistant coach 1959; Lima Shawnee HS coach 1960-1963 with 28-10 record; assistant coach Miami of Ohio 1964-1968; defensive coordinator U of Michigan 1969-1972, including acting head coach for 1970 Rose Bowl; head coach Arizona 1973-1976, Purdue 1977-1981, and Army 1983-1990; assistant coach Arizona 1992; retired after 30 years coaching with 120-71-2 career record, 18 as head coach and 12 as an assistant.

Coaching Honors: Compiled a 5-1 record in 6 bowl games; 4 teams finished season ranked in top 20 nationally; Arizona WAC Champs, Coach of Year 1973, and 31-13 record; Purdue Big Ten Coach of Year 1978 and 38-19-1 record; third winningest coach in Army history with 51-39-1 record; received All-American Johnny Vaught Head Coach Lifetime Achievement Award 1997; named to Halls of Fame at Purdue, Bowling Green, US Military Academy, Arizona, Lima Shawnee HS, Pima County, OH; inductee College Football Hall of Fame 1999
