Outstanding sophomore in Southern Conference; won Circle and Torch Award for Most Outstanding Athlete for period of 4 years; made 3 All-American Teams; was unanimous choice All-Southern Halfback 1936.
Attended War Training School and Pre- Flight School in 1942-1943, serving in Naval Civil Service program during WW II; inducted into Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame 2000.
Coaching Experience: Coached at University of Tennessee Junior College 1937; Cookeville HS 1938; assistant coach at Wofford College 1939-1941; North Carolina State University 1942-1943; Mississippi State College 1945-1947; athletic director and head coach at Wofford College 1947-1952; head coach at Wyoming 1952-1956, where he won 2 conference crowns and beat Texas Tech in the 1956 Sun Bowl; coached at Indiana University 1957-1964.

Coaching Honors: Named Coach of the Year 3 times in South Carolina; Coach of the Year in Rocky Mountain area twice; Coach of the Year in Big 10 in 1958; third runner-up for National Coach of the Year honors in 1958; team was Conference Champions 1956; never had a losing season until 1960; college and high school career total record 110-51-11.
