In 1966, his first season, he played and practiced with 4 First Team All-Americans (Bubba Smith, Gene Washington, George Webster and Clinton Jones). He ran against the starting defensive team, playing across from 6'9", 275 lb. Bubba Smith. He is very proud of his time as a Spartan, playing with the first racially integrated team in the country.
Helmut went on to become All-State 1st Team at offensive center, 1st Team All-Conference, and Scholastic Coaches Honorable Mention All-American.
Helmut married his college sweetheart, Charlene Bradley, and have two children, Dr. Zachary Goral (who served in the Air Force and is an Iraq war veteran) and Adrienne Goral Maresca.
